Puffy Eye Prevention Tips

Be sure to get enough sleep at night. One reason for puffy eyes is that you’re just not getting enough sleep, or the quality of the sleep you’re getting is low. Bags under the eyes is a commonplace symptom of sleep privation.

Not enough water. A significant number of people prone to puffy eyes are normally dehydrated. If you suffer from puffy eyes, you probably need to drink more water. Aim for a gallon a day or at least 3 quarts. Drink only water or herbal tea. Sweet, flavored or carbonated drinks aren’t very hydrating. And if you drink coffee or alcohol regularly, you need an additional glass of water for each glass of wine or cup of coffee.

Look at how you sleep. It’s not uncommon to have puffy eyes in the morning. One explanation for this can be that if you are laying down in a flat position and then stand up, the fluid that was held in the tissue under your eyes is suddenly being drawn down by gravity. This swelling usually will subside before long. One way you can prevent waking up with puffy eyes, is to lift your head while sleeping so that the fluid is not as abruptly drawn down as you get up.

Look at your salt intake. A high intake of sodium can cause your body to retain fluid. Try using less salt and see if that shrinks your puffy eyes.

Drink cabbage or cranberry juice. These foods are diuretics, which will help your body evacuate some excess fluid in your body. Other diuretics include the herbs uva ursi and golden rod.

Give yourself extra exercise. Exercise naturally improves circulation, which will cause your body to move fluid through your body, instead of letting it amass.
