Creation Theory: a Magical Means of Origin

Opinions of a special creation theory or other magical means of the earth’s beginning is absolutely dead! “Special Creation” is declared to apply to the higher groups in addition to to the species of a genus, and even Mr. Darwin’s strongest critics dare to suggest that the primeval bird, reptile, or fish could have been “specially created.” This massive, this completely unprecedented change in public thought has been the effect of the influence of one man, and was played out in the short time of twenty years! This is the resolve to those who go on to assert that the “origin of species” is not yet ascertained. We may admit this notion, just as we may admit that there are sizable difficulties in the means of a realized comprehension of the source and nature of all the parts of the solar system and stellar universe. Yet we accredit Darwin as the Newton of natural history, just so surely as we admit that the uncovering and demonstration by Newton of the law of gravity established order in place of chaos and set a sure groundwork for all approaching study of the cosmos, so certainly has Darwin, by his discovery of the law of natural selection and his manifestation of the great theory of the preservation of functional variations in the struggle for life established a strong base for all potential study of nature.

Just to point out the attitude Darwin had of his study, and he alone postulated to have done, the concluding excerpt of the introduction to the Origin of Species ought to be carefully considered. “Although much remains obscure, and will long remain obscure, I can hold no doubt, after the most intentional and dispassionate judgment of which I am capable, that the opinion that many have held, including myself until recently — namely, that each species has been independently created — is erroneous. I am fully confident that species are not immutable; but that those belonging to the same genera are direct descendents of some other and generally extinct species, in the same way as the recognize varieties of any one species are the descendents of that species. Furthermore, I am confident that Natural Selection has been the most important, but not the only, means of modification.”
