Farha considers himself to be one of the best Omaha online poker players in the world, and Dempsey was certainly a worthy opponent. That said, just like in every other form of poker online game, you have to develop a system for handling your money. You would be insane to jump into a 50NL HU game with a bankroll of only 100 dollars. That’s just two buy-ins, and when you’re chances of stacking off are exponentially increased (as they are in HU play), you want a little bit of padding if you get your opponent read wrong, or if you simply misplay a hand here and there.

A good standard amount is a little less than is recommended for full ring and six-max which is 30. For Heads Up play, 20 buy-ins should be sufficient to keep you afloat if you’re at least an average player.

But there’s something else you need to know about your bankroll when playing HU hold’em poker. If you use a chart to keep tabs on your wins and losses, expect to see a lot more losses in the bb/hr column. Also expect the “Went to showdown” ratio to skyrocket. If you’re a normal grinder, you’ll notice that most of your chart looks like small steps, with a few dips, but it is steadily in the rise in most cases with no huge variance. In HU charts, they tend to take more massive swings than rolls do with more players. That said, don’t be discouraged if your winnings graph looks like a sine wave for a while. It probably will if you’re just starting out, and it will take you a while to get to the point where you’re consistently coming up on the curve higher than from where you started to drop.

When you see a low flop like this, it’s generally a good idea to come out betting, especially from a blind position. Players who are in the blinds are a lot more likely to play smaller starting hands, and your online poker opponents are more likely to put you on a set when you bet from the blinds.

This tactic can be beneficial in those rare times when you actually end up flopping a set with a low table pair. If you’ve been caught buffing on a similar hand before and you make the same bet with the set, your opponents are probably going to put you on another bluff, calling your bet or (if you’re lucky) reraising you in an attempt to chase you out.

Establish a tight image early on. Playing noticeably tight online poker for the first few rounds will have your opponents putting you on good cards every time you bet into a hand, so fold often in the beginning of the game.

Wait for a weak online poker table-the best time to try to make a grab for the blinds is when there are only a few players involved, and no one has raised yet. Ideally, it’ll just be you and the blinds. Wait until you’re in a later betting position and the majority of the table is folding.

Bet the right amount. Bet enough to scare your opponents out of the hand, but not so much that you’re pot committed if someone re-raises you. Usually three or four times the big blind is about right.

Steal Blinds Sparingly-if you do it too often, people will start to catch on and you’ll get more callers. Usually, I don’t steal more than twice in a button rotation.

Get out if you’re beat-if someone calls your bluff and re-raises you, don’t call him out of pride. If you’ve got rags, fold and make sure that you don’t try to bluff him again.

Though usually quite verbal, once he’s in hand, he freezes up, putting his hands up to cover his lower face, and looking down, not moving a bit. He goes from being an extrovert to total introvert to keep from giving away any emotional tells.
